Minami Matsui

Born in Gifu, Minami first picked up the saxophone in the third grade, inspired by her father. Twenty years on, the instrument has never left her side. In high school she won a gold medal at the All-Japan Marching Band Championship and performed in parades in the United States as a member of a Japan all-star ensemble. She then spent four years studying jazz in Pasadena, California, winning first place at the Reno Jazz Festival with her college big band. Today she is based in Osaka, performing at shows, live venues, and events.

歴— CAREER

  1. 1996

    Born in Gifu, the eldest daughter

  2. 2004

    Age 9 — takes up classical saxophone, inspired by her father

  3. 2007

    Age 12 — discovers jazz. Studies under Satoko Nakagawa

  4. 2012 - 13

    Gold medal at the national marching band championship. Performs in the U.S. Disneyland & Rose Parades with a Japan all-star ensemble. After graduating, studies under Michiyo Kobayashi and commits to jazz

  5. 2015

    Four years at a music college in Pasadena, CA. Studies under Josh Johnson and Hitomi Oba. First place at the Reno Jazz Festival with her college big band

  6. 2026 - Now, Osaka

    Featured saxophonist in a year-round music show at a major theme park (winner of the top IPPA award). Performs at events including the JTB-sponsored Osaka Variety Act Show
